Sevilla enjoyed their first Champions League win of the season on Wednesday night as they brushed Rennes aside with a 1-0 win at the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan.
It was a single Luuk de Jong strike that sealed the points for the LaLiga Santander side, despite them managing more than 20 shots at Rennes’ goal, with ten of those being on target.
De Jong spent most of the night doing the dirty work in a sacrificial role designed to create chances for his strike partners Munir El-Haddadi and Lucas Ocampos, particularly in the first half when he himself barely had a sniff at goal.
The second half started similarly but De Jong got his goal before the hour mark with a fine finish. A patient move was built from the back by Sevilla before Marcos Acuna was set free down the left.
The Argentine put a high ball towards the box that fell right into De Jong’s path, allowing him to volley first-time in for the game’s only goal.
Sevilla are still level on points with Chelsea after their opening day draw, as the Blues won 4-0 at Krasnodar earlier in the evening.
