Liverpool overtake Leicester to join Tottenham atop the Premier League

The trip to Anfield was a mountain too high for Leicester to climb, with Liverpool comfortably beating the unlikely title contenders 3-0 on Sunday evening.

Brendan Rodgers’ Foxes travelled to Merseyside well in the title race, but Liverpool, despite their injury problems, had too much for them to handle. Jurgen Klopp was having to play his sixth central defensive pair on the night, deploying Fabinho alongside Joel Matip.

Leicester fell behind in the first half in unfortunate fashion. Jonny Evans suffered the embarrassment of heading into his own goal in a bizarre play, with the ball appearing to just ricochet off his head and past Kasper Schmeichel. That was just the beginning of Evans’ tough night though, as he was terrorised by Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

Diogo Jota got the Reds’ second before half time, heading in to finish a move that involved 30 Liverpool passes. Roberto Firmino headed in the third on the end of a James Milner corner in the 86th minute.
