Phil Mickelson commits to Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit, joins solid field

Just ahead of tickets going on sale for the Rocket Mortgage Classic, the tournament added several new commitments for the tournament, including 2021 PGA Championship winner Phil Mickelson.

Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Webb Simpson, Kevin Kisner, Sungjae Im, Max Homa and Cameron Champ were announced Thursday morning. They join defending champion Bryson DeChambeau (the No. 4 ranked player in the world), Jason Day, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler and Harold Varner III in the field for the tournament, slated for July 1-4 at Detroit Golf Club.

Tickets for the tournament went on sale at 8 a.m. Thursday.

Mickelson, 50, became the oldest winner of a golf major on Sunday when he held off Brooks Koepka for the PGA Championship, Mickelson’s sixth major. The 45-time winner on the PGA Tour will make his first appearance at the tournament, which is in its third year.

Reed is a nine-time winner on the PGA Tour and won the 2018 Masters. He’s currently the No. 8 ranked player in the world and won previously this season at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in California. Reed missed the cut at last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic and tied for fifth in 2019.

Simpson is the 11th-ranked player in the world and won the 2012 U.S. Open held at Olympic Club in San Francisco. He tied for eighth in the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Kisner, ranked No. 47 in the world, finished third at last year’s RMC and tied for 46th two years ago. He has three career wins.

This will be the first time playing in Detroit for Im, who has one career win and is ranked No. 23 in the world.

Homa finished tied for 42nd at the 2019 Rocket Mortgage Classic. He has two career wins, including at the 2021 Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, and is ranked No. 42 in the world.

Champ tied for 12th in 2020 and tied for 46th in 2019 at Detroit Golf Club. He’s ranked 103rd in the world and has two PGA Tour wins.
