SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Let’s take a trip back to the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship at Rich Harvest Farms outside Chicago.
The weather for the final match between Oklahoma and Oregon was a delightful 72 degrees, perfect for a sweater vest. Oklahoma head coach Ryan Hybl rocked a gray vest all week, and his Sooners went on to win their second national title in program history following a win in 1989 at Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond, Oklahoma.
Up until Tuesday morning’s quarterfinal match at the 2021 NCAA Championship against Illinois, Hybl hadn’t touched the vest. He kept the dry-cleaning tags on and everything. Needing a spark to ignite his Sooners, who hadn’t won a match at the national championship since, Hybl snipped the tags and rocked the vest in near 100-degree heat at Grayhawk Golf Club and his team delivered, defeating Illinois, 3-2, in the quarters and Arizona State, 3-2, in the semifinals.
“I was feeling cool all day,” said Hybl after his team advanced to Wednesday’s final match against Pepperdine.
It comes as no surprise he’s wearing the vest again today.

“I didn’t see him until my 17th hole my first match, so I had no idea he was wearing it,” said sixth-year senior Quade Cummins, who was on the title team in 2017. “I knew exactly what it was when I saw him sitting on the tee box. He told me he brought it. I forgot about it. If he has good vibes we all have good vibes so we’re all-in on the sweater vest.”
