How BetMGM, Vegas sports books handled bets on Jon Rahm at the Memorial

Bettors at BetMGM Sportsbook were spared a bad beat Saturday night when Jon Rahm was forced to withdraw from the Memorial Tournament due to a positive COVID-19 test.

Rahm, the defending tournament champion and 2021 betting favorite, was ahead by six strokes at 18 under at the end of his third round. With the win seeming inevitable under conventional circumstances, BetMGM paid out all outright, top-5, top-10 and top-20 wagers in cash.

How BetMGM handled bets on Jon Rahm

BetMGM declared all pre-tournament and in-play bets on Rahm to win the Memorial, as well as all placing bets, as winners.

A $100 bet on Rahm to win prior to the start of the Memorial would’ve returned a profit of $1,000 at +1000 odds.

Mobile and online users were told to expect the cash in their accounts within 48 hours. Those who placed a bet at a brick-and-mortar location could cash those tickets starting Monday.

How Las Vegas sportsbooks handled bets on Rahm

Other books, including Circa Sports and Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook, stuck by house rules and graded all bets on Rahm as losers.

Those rules state that a ticket is live so long as a golfer begins their first round.

Who won the Memorial Tournament?

Patrick Cantlay, the 2019 champion of the Memorial, went on to best Collin Morikawa in a playoff Sunday for his fourth career PGA Tour title. He opened the tournament week at +2200 at BetMGM, with a $100 bet returning a profit of $2,200.
