Wijnaldum and Depay star as Oranje ease to top spot with Austria also progressing with a win over Ukraine

The Netherlands joined Italy as the only team with all three wins in their group stage matches as they thumped North Macedonia in Amsterdam. Captain Georginio Wijnaldum scored a double after Memphis Depay’s opener to finish their group stage participation in an empathic fashion.A largely open and enjoyable first half saw the hosts take the lead courtesy of a Depay goal. The recent Barcelona signing continued to torment defenders in this tournament. Both sides have had chances, with North Macedonia having a strike ruled out for offside and also hitting a post. The Netherlands could have added to their tally, with Denzel Dumfries twice going close after Depay had opened the scoring.???????? But Memphis was the real star. Not only has he scored his ninth goal in his last 10 appearances for the Dutch, but he has also claimed assists for both of Wijnaldum’s goals.Long-serving North Macedonia captain Goran Pandev was subbed off late on in what was his final international appearance. The Serie A veteran was given a guard of honour by his teammates and a big round of applause from everyone on the pitch.Respect. 1⃣2⃣2⃣???? The match ended in a comfortable 3-0 for Oranje as North Macedonia bowed out.Elsewhere in Group C, Austria and Ukraine went head-to-head in a battle for second place and a slot in the knockout stage. The Austrians went ahead early on through young Christoph Baumgartner and should have scored a few more. However, they weren’t sharp enough in the final third and they kept the awful Ukraine team in the game for far longer than their performance warranted. The final whistle meant that Austria earned the points and qualified from their group in a major tournament for the first time.???????? Congratulations, Austria!
