It comes with experience, Njunge discusses penalty heroics

Trailblazing Nairobi City Stars goalkeeper Steve Njunge is fast making a name as a mean penalty saver alongside Gor Mahia’s Gad Mathews. The duo have a penchant of thwarting strikers from twelve yards and he credits his penalty saving heroics to good anticipation and timing.Njunge denied Christopher Masinza from the spot in a league match against Kakamega Homeboyz on Saturday afternoon. His save proved crucial as they went on to win the match by a solitary goal. Nicholas Kipkirui scored the lone goal of the match late on in the second half. It was his second save of the season after denying Nzoia’s Cliff Kasuti towards the end of last year.In an interview, the former FC Talanta and Wazito keeper said saving a penalty is all about anticipation and being keen on the taker’s body language“I think it has to do with anticipation and the timing of the taker’s and your own movements. When he took the ball I focused on his body language and I knew that he was going on my right, I went full stretch and pulled a save. During that period we were on top of our game and as a keeper, I had to keep my team in the game and I managed to pull a save,” he told Mozzart Sport. The 90 minutes club:5 matches, all starts, no substitution.Nairobi City StarsSalim AbdallaKennedy OnyangoPeter OpiyoSteve Njunge (GK)#footkeIMAGES/ Nairobi City Stars pic.twitter.com/IYBnSrfxuC— Footballers Of Our Time (@TransferMarktEA) December 26, 2020 Njunge added that he has developed the art of stopping spot kicks over the years.“It is something that comes with experience, I have faced many penalties over the years and I think I have learned how to study penalty takers. Sometimes you get it right sometimes they beat you, it’s part of the game,” he added. On the team’s target for the season, the custodian says his team is still in contention for the league title.“There are so many games to go and we have to keep fighting. We want to win each and every game if possible and after that, we will see what happens at the end of the season, no team has been declared champions yet and so the title race is wide open,” he added.Next for City Stars is a game against Nzoia Sugar.
