Kenyan midfielder speaks on impressive form in US

Former St. Anthony’s Kitale skipper and 2016 KSSSA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Philip Mayaka’s Colorado Springs have enjoyed a four-game unbeaten run after a rough start to the season. Mayaka was the third overall pick in the Major Soccer League (MLS) Super Draft back in January by Colorado Rapids but was loaned to Colorado Springs in May to hand him more playing time.Springs have picked up form after posting inconsistent results at the start of the season and have now drawn two and won twice in their last four encounters.Mayaka attributed the good run of form to settling well into the team and fostering a telepathic understanding between the midfielders and forwards.Up next… A rematch with @NewMexicoUTD on Friday night! 👊🎟️ https://t.co/SSMYzDINIm #SwitchbacksFC pic.twitter.com/RsL6F8dhEL— SwitchbacksFC (@SwitchbacksFC) June 24, 2021 “Training together, and knowing how our strikers and midfielders make runs, the combinations come so quick. We’re all team players. We trust each other and we keep pushing together as a team,” said Mayaka. The 20-year-old made his first start for the club on Wednesday in the 3-2 win over Austin Bold in the United Soccer League (USL) Championship. The midfielder was limited to substitute appearances for Rapids after joining the side on loan but impressed in his first start, inspiring the team to a win as he assisted Yaya Toure’s match-winner.Switchbacks coach Brendan Burke has trained his sights on winning the next clash against New Mexico United who sit in fourth, three points above Springs. “This is a statement game for us. If we don’t get it, we don’t get it. But it’s still a huge measuring stick for us,” said Burke.
