DETROIT — The field of players for the PGA Tour’s Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club was announced at Friday’s deadline to enter the third year tournament, which will feature some of the biggest names in golf.
Bryson DeChambeau will return to defend his title, and reigning PGA Championship winner Phil Mickelson will make his tournament debut and play in his first PGA Tour event in Michigan since 2002, when he teed it up at the Buick Open in Grand Blanc.
Reigning Masters champ Hideki Matsuyama also will be in the 156-player field in his third straight appearance at the Rocket.
The tournament only features two players in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking—DeChambeau, at No. 6, and Patrick Reed, at No. 9—but it does include 13 past major champions.
In addition to DeChambeau, Mickelson, Matsuyama and Reed, the other champs in the field are Keegan Bradley, Jason Day, Jason Dufner, Lucas Glover, Webb Simpson, Jimmy Walker, Bubba Watson, Danny Willett and Gary Woodland.
Former Oakland University golfer Brian Stuard returns for a third time after posting top-30 finishes in each of the first two tournaments. Former Michigan State golfer Ryan Brehm also is in the field.
Former Flint Golf Club pro Jeff Roth, 63, is in the field as the Michigan PGA section champion. Flint native Willie Mack III will play on a sponsor exemption.
Fans are allowed back after COVID-19 protocols kept them away last year. The tournament kicks off in earnest Tuesday with a charity scramble that will feature Barry Sanders and Tom Izzo, followed by Wednesday’s pro am and tournament rounds Thursday through Sunday.
