The race for the golden boot seems to be heating up as the league enters the final third with both Eric Kapaito and Elvis Rupia on the forefront. The former rediscovered his scoring touch in the previous round after misfiring previously and this makes it even more interesting to see how the race will pan out in the remaining rounds. Kapaito still leads the chart with Rupia and Lawrence Juma following closely ahead of round 23.After going for seven matches without scoring, top scorer Kapaito got back to his scoring ways in the 4-1 defeat to Bandari FC after converting a second-half penalty. All eyes are now on whether Kapaito will follow with a 16th goal on the back of the 15th one, with the striker having had acknowledged that the drought had made him worried.Rupia, missing out of the starting 11 for the first time in the league this season came off the bench to slot home his 14th of the season, from the penalty spot as well, and move within one goal off Kapaito.Elvis Rupia became the first @AFCLeopards to score 14 goals in a single season since the club regained Premier status. One more goal and he goes joint second as leading scorer post 2009. pic.twitter.com/uA79Ol2Qcd— Emmanuel Mketu (@EMketu) June 27, 2021 You blink, you lose. This is the case between the two strikers who both seem to be on track for 20 plus goals this season. The two will face off on Wednesday and it could be a perfect chance for Rupia to catch up by scoring against Kariobangi Sharks as he did in the first leg encounter.Rupia has made good use of Kapaito’s absence on the scoreboards and has managed to close the three goals gap between the two since the resumption of football in May.The same has been the case with the Sofapaka midfielder, netting against Wazito, KCB, and a brace against AFC Leopards since resumption.Kapaito’s run without scoring has also affected Kariobangi Sharks scoring ability as well as their performance in general as they have lost all their five games, winning only two games since February.🦈|Erick Kapaito who’s the Top scorer in the league also leads the @k_sharksfc Charts with 14 goals#BKPL pic.twitter.com/ITumrcDTvd— Betking Kenya Premier League (@Officialfkfpl) March 25, 2021 The former Gor Mahia midfielder, who has been on a roll failed to find the back of the net as Sofapaka played to a barren draw with Ulinzi Stars at Utalii Grounds in round 22.Threatening to catch up at some point, William Wadri and Henry Meja are both tied at nine goals while Tusker’s Jackson Macharia, Wazito’s Kevin Kimani, Nairobi City Stars’ Peter ‘Pinchez’ Opiyo, and KCB’s Derrick Otanga make up the rest of the chasing pack with seven. The question remains, will Kapaito hold on to the first place, or will Rupia outscore him. Better still, can Lawrence Juma manage to outscore both of them at the end of the campaign?
