Kenyan goalkeeper wins award in Zambia

After what has been a great season, Kenyan goalkeeper Ian Otieno has been feted by his Zambian club, Zesco United after the conclusion of the 2020/21 Zambian Super League campaign.Otieno, who is currently Zesco’s first-choice custodian has been named the most consistent player at the club. Zesco let in 26 goals with Otieno in goal in nearly all the league assignments. Zimbabwean midfielder, Thabani Kamusoko walked away with the most disciplined player award while John Ching’andu was named players’ player of the year. He went on to establish himself as the club’s first-choice custodian, displacing long-serving Jacob Banda who officially retired from competitive football on Sunday. Banda had been with Zesco for 16 years winning eight of their 9 league titles.The team also gave him a good send-off after putting Buildcon to the sword with a 7-2 mauling in Ndola. They amassed a total of 71 points after 34 rounds of league matches. Zanaco finished second with 55. The Ndola-based club now returns to the continental scene after missing out this season. Kenyan trio of Were Otieno and John Makwatta all won the league with Zesco.Meanwhile, another Kenya trio in Zambia was not so lucky. David Owino and Shaban Odhoji suffered relegation with Lusaka-based ZSL side, Napsa Stars while Teddy Osok suffered the same fate with Kitwe United.
