Mashemeji Derby moved from Ruaraka but does new venue befit its stature?

The 2021 FKF Cup final between arch rivals AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia scheduled for Sunday 4th July will now be played at the Utalii Grounds and not Ruaraka as earlier scheduled.Football Kenya Federation (FKF) had tentatively settled on overused Ruaraka grounds to host the usually explosive fixture as they tried to secure either Nyayo or Moi International Sports Center Kasarani.But Sports Kenya refused to grant FKF any venue, insisting that the two venues are fully booked by Kenya Rugby Union and Kenya’s Olympic Team respectively.They have now been forced to move to the Utalii Grounds, a venue that hosted a number of Cup matches including the two semi finals.Sunday’s FKF CUP final pitting AFC Leopards against Gor Mahia will now be played at Utalii Grounds and not Ruaraka Grounds as earlier planned.The match will be preceded by Third position playoff between Equity FC and Bidco United.The winner walks home with Ksh. 2 M.#FKFCUP pic.twitter.com/95DG7zYd2Y— Ole Teya (@Kevin_teya) June 29, 2021 “The FKF Cup final, pitting AFC Leopards against their arch rivals Gor Mahia, will now be played at the Utalii Grounds and not Ruaraka as was earlier scheduled. The match has been slated for Sunday, July 4, 2021, starting at 3 pm,” read a statement from FKF.The final will be preceded by the third place play-off match in which surprise package Equity FC who play in the Division One League slug it out with top-flight debutants Bidco United. The winner will pocket Ksh750,000 while the loser goes home with Ksh500,000. The match will kick off at 12 PM. The final will then follow at 3pm with Ksh2 million prize money at stake. The loser will go home with Ksh1 million. With the two finalists struggling financially, the prize money is a big motivation for them as it could slightly ease their struggles. Peter Opiyo, now with Nairobi City Stars scored the all-important goal. Gor has however proved to be a bogey team to Leopards in recent years. The last time Ingwe downed their rivals was in 2016 during a league match played at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani.
