FKF President Nick Mwendwa has explained how the decision to submit the team at the top of the log on June 30 as the country’s representative in CAF Champions League was arrived at.Speaking to Tikitaka’s Ali Hassan Kauleni, Mwendwa said that it was either a team was submitted by the date given by CAF, or Kenya would have missed out from participating in Africa’s premier club football tournament altogether, saying that efforts to have CAF extend the deadline by a month were futile.”CAF said that come what may, we must give them our entrant by June 30. We wrote to them seeking a one-month extension to try and wrap up the league but they declined and insisted that we have to give them the representative by June 30, and the Cup champion by July 4 or else Kenya would miss on the two,” Mwendwa said.Hi @CAF_Online is that you?Qualification for champions league football done. Now all to play for in the league…c’mon @tusker_fc 🐘 pic.twitter.com/lvnOGOcoie— Eugene Asike (@eugeneasike) July 1, 2021 Speaking on the decision, Mwendwa said that it was not his decision but that of the Leagues and Competitions committee to submit the name of the team at the top of the log to CAF despite the progress of the league on June 30.”The committee concerned with the running of the league sat and advised us that in our rules and regulations, as long as the league has been played past the halfway mark the league can be ended and the team on top declared number one. On the same line of thought, they said that we should submit the team at the top on June 30 to represent the country. A month and a half before, the committee sat and approved that it is possible that whoever goes to the Champions League may not be necessarily the league winner, and the same was communicated to clubs,” Mwendwa told Tikitaka.Mwendwa added that the decision was not subject to approval by clubs as it is the sole responsibility of the Leagues and Competitions Committee to make such decisions.”This was not something to ask clubs. There is a committee that is tasked with such things, Leagues and Competitions Committee. They met, discussed, and gave us the decision,” Mwendwa said.Congratulations to @tusker_fc who will represent the country in next season’s #CAFCL 👏🏾#Tusker #BKPLhttps://t.co/ft9iXYs0RR— Mozzart Sport Kenya (@MozzartSportKe) June 30, 2021 The president also noted that the league would go on as planned and would be played to the end in August, affirming that the team at the top of the log on the last matchday will be the official league champion, but Tusker will represent the country in CAF Champions League as their name has already been submitted.”The league will continue and the winner of the league does not have to be the CAF Champions League entrant. When the league ends in August, that will be the official champion of the FKFPL,” Mwendwa added.##EDITORS_CHOICE##
