Experienced Mathare United centre back David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng’ has lauded the team’s mentality after the slum boys managed to claw their way back from a seven point deficit that saw them precariously sit bottom of the Football Kenya Federation Premier League standings. At the tail end of June, the club look assured to find it hard to beat relegation but two wins in their last three games have handed the slum boys a lifeline and a fighting chance to salvage their top flight status in the league. Currently, although they are still at the foot of the table, they have cut down the gap from seven to only one point with ten games left to play before the season wraps up.📍 | Narok Stadium #VihigaVsMathare pic.twitter.com/gKWNIz2mNP— Mathare United FC (@MathareUtd) June 30, 2021 With fortunes now slightly changed, the tough tackling centre back has now revealed what the club had been working on since new head coach Frank Ouna took over from Salim Ali in May.“First of all, when the coach came in, the mentality was to push. We had a really difficult run of games where we faced the top teams in the league in consecutive matches (KCB, Nzoia Sugar, Leopards, Gor, KCB, Leopards). We have been putting up a fight in the past games but we have not been getting the needed goals,”⚽️|Only 1 week ago, the slum boys appeared to be on the cusp of relegation. But 2 wins in the last 3 games now have the club only 1 point from safety. Will they pull the rabbit out of the hat and beat the drop?#MathareUnited #FrankOuna #BKPL https://t.co/XspFpd02EV— Mozzart Sport Kenya (@MozzartSportKe) July 1, 2021 “We then really needed to start scoring so that even when we are defending, we have something we are holding onto. Especially in our game against AFC Leopards, even though they had the most number of scoring opportunities, we used our chance well by scoring and we hung onto that single goal to walk away with the three precious points,” he told Mozzart Sport. After picking up a stunning win against Ingwe, Mathare lost their next match to Posta Rangers before dramatically finding a last minute winner against Vihiga United in their last match. In matchday 24, Mathare are not in action and the club will most likely use that break to sharpen their tools before preparing for a battle in their do or die last ten games of the season. Their first match of the ten will be a trip against Kakamega Homeboyz.
