Mathare United head coach Frank Ouna has continuously kept on exuding faith in his team’s chances of avoiding the axe from the top flight despite failing to move out of the relegation zone since the start of the season. After cutting down a seven point deficit to only one with two wins in three matches, the slum boys’ hopes of surviving took a sinking blow after consecutive defeats to Kakamega Homeboyz – where they blew a 2-1 lead by the 80th minute – and the recent 0-1 loss to Bidco United. Cumulatively, Mathare has lost sixteen out of the twenty three games they have played this season and despite them sitting four points off the pace, Ouna believes the team’s character will pull them through what is a difficult patch for the club.“We are down on our luck at the moment. We are playing well in matches and creating chances that if we convert then we are not in this position. It is frustrating but I believe we have the character to turn this around. We just have to be patient with the chances that we create. The two or three teams above us on the table are within touching distance, we can turn it around. I harbor belief that we can do it and until it is mathematically impossible, don’t count us out,” he is quoted on the club’s portal. With only seven games left for Mathare to salvage their season, the club face a daunting task in their next fixture as they take on current top tablle toppers Tusker FC.
