Is this a shrewd financial move to cut the costs during the hard times of Covid-19 pandemic, or it’s just a clear out so they can by Erling Haaland? Time will tell, but so far, Chelsea is only selling players, and earning money. The Champions League winners have sold a number of players so far, mostly unused ones, and earned 7.7 billion Ksh, but more is to come, as some of the first team players will be available, and they command bigger transfer fees.OFFICIAL: Olivier Giroud is the new number ‘nine’ of AC MilanIn the previous three seasons (since the summer of 2019), Chelsea earned a little more than 34.5 billion Ksh from the sale of players. The players who left were not in coaches’ planes or didn’t have any serious impact at the club. Truth to be told, a large part of that transfer sum came from one important player – Eden Hazard (14.7 billion), who left for Real Madrid one year before becoming a free agent. This summer, Fikayo Tomori left the club for 3.7 billion Ksh. The young stopper was sent on loan to the San Siro last summer and impressed enough to earn a contract for AC Milan. The Blues have earned another 640 million Ksh from Victor Moses’ transfer to Spartak Moscow, while Olivier Giroud was sold to Milan for a symbolic 127 million, but the English club got rid of his huge salary and could another 127 million in various bonuses. The biggest surprise was certainly a 3 billion Ksh deal for Mark Guehi, an unknown defender, who spent the past two and a half years on loan in Swansea, which was good enough for Crystal Palace to buy him. From West London to South London: Crystal Palace sign defender Marc Guehi from ChelseaThere is also a bunch of players whose contract was up, and left the club as free agents, and while Chelsea didn’t earned any money, their wages added to the summer transfer kitty (Van Ginkel, Caballero, Blackman, Pantic). Apart from the talented Billy Gilmour, who was sent to loan to Norwich, a bunch of talented youngsters could find themselves in another club (again) during the upcoming season (Gallagher, Loftus-Cheek, Malang Sarr), unless they impress Thomas Tuchel during the pre-season.Chelsea nails a half a dozen on their pre-season premierAnd that’s not all. There are other players who will most likely end their tenure with the Blues, like Baba Rahman, Zappacosta, Batshuayi, Bakayoko, Barkley, or Drinkwater, but also some first team players, like Marcos Alonso, Emerson Palmieri, Tammy Abraham or Hudson-Odoi. They will certainly add more cash for those players in order to buy a quality, well proven forward: Erling Haaland or Robert Lewandowski. Also, Chelsea would like to add a raising English star like Declan Rice, so any available penny will be raised for those purchases. And in the end, owner Roman Abramovich will help with a considerable sum, no less than 20 billion Ksh.
