Burnley have added more proven Premier League pedigree to their squad with the capture of record-breaking Wales international goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey. The 34-year old joins the Clarets as a free agent following his departure from top-flight rivals Crystal Palace and has agreed a two-year deal – with a further year’s option – at Turf Moor.Wayne Hennessey (#CrystalPalace, libre) ➡️ #Burnley pic.twitter.com/0drY0YA16v— Planeta Fichajes (@Planetafichajes) July 20, 2021 Burnley already have Nick Pope, who has seven England caps but was not part of the Euro 2020 squad. Wayne is ready to challenge the Englishman for a spot between the sticks.”Everyone knows how good Nick is and what a nice guy he is. There have been so many superb British goalkeepers down the line. For me to come and be one of them is fantastic. Popey’s a great lad but it’s competition, which is healthy. That’s part of the goalkeeping union. There’s always competition. There’s always that one spot but we’ll be friends off the field. There’s a fantastic spirit here and hopefully we’ll do really well this season.”Hennessey has made 181 Premier League appearances for Wolves and Palace.
On the international front, he progressed through the Wales’ youth ranks to make his full debut in 2007. He has since become a leading figure in Welsh football history, helping his country qualify for their first major tournament finals in almost 60 years and then reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2016. He then started every game as Wales also qualified for the delayed Euro 2020 finals and with his sights set on a century of caps.
