Debunking Ambani’s mythical 26-goal record in a single season

Young Africans legend and former Tusker FC forward Boniface Ambani is widely and erroneously regarded as Kenya’s all-time top scorer in a single season with 26 goals. However, official records for the 2005/2006 season clearly indicate that the forward plundered 21 goals as opposed to the widely circulated 26. It is in fact Maurice ‘Sonyi’ Onyango who scored 26 goals for Gor Mahia in the 1975 season that stands to date. Prolific Kariobangi Sharks forward Eric Kapaito’s exploits this season have revived a debate about the highest goal haul per season as the 25 year-old hit the 22 goal tally this week.Ambani was a revered forward who developed a knack of banging goals week in week out with his exploits seeing him turn out for Sporting Club de Goa, East Bengal Club and Yanga. So good was his goal-scoring prowess that he bagged the Golden Boot award in the then Kenyan Premier League and Tanzanian Premier League but his illustrious career was cut short by an Achilles tendon injury.Happy birthday to the AFC Leopards CUBS coach and our former player Boniface Ambani#INGWE pic.twitter.com/3RbrjXQxcF— AFC Leopards (@AFCLeopards) May 3, 2019 According to the official KPL documents, Ambani emerged as the top scorer with 21 goals in the 2005-2006 season as Tusker missed out on the title by a single point to eventual winners Sony Sugar which to date remains their only league title.Ambani bagged his first goal of the season in the 3-0 win over Red Berets and went on a seven-game drought but ended his barren spell in the 1-1 draw against Gor Mahia on Sunday 8 January 2006.The 38-year-old then bagged a first-half brace in the 2-0 win over the now-defunct Agro Chemical and claimed another brace two games later in the 5-0 rout of Shabana. After four games without finding the back of the net, Ambani returned to score in the 1-3 win over World Hope and was on mark again in the 3-0 win over Coast Stars which set his three-game scoring streak as he netted in Thika United and Agro Chemicals.WITH FOOTBALL GREATS, former Harambee Stars keeper Matthew Ottamax and striker Boniface Ambani. Ever proud of you. How many years have passed since then? I cannot remember which teams I scored against,” said Ambani.
