Vincent Oburu came off the bench to score two goals in a space of two minutes as Wazito heightened Mathare United’s relegation fears with a 2-1 win in a league match staged at the Thika Sub-County Stadium Stadium on Sunday afternoon.Heading into the game, Mathare knew that they had to get a positive result in order to keep pace with fellow relegation battlers. Wazito on the other hand wanted to get a second win on the bounce for the first time since January.Wazito assistant coach John Kamau said introducing Oburu at halftime turned the tide to their favor.”Mathare were very compact in the first half and we decided to bring on Oburu who is a more direct player and I am happy because it worked and we got a win,” Wazito assistant coach John Kamau said.Mathare head coach Frank Ouna rued the chances they missed and feels they deserved at least a point from the match.”I think we deserved at least a point from this game because we had the better chances in the game which we didn’t take. But we have to keep working because our destiny is still in our hands. I strongly believe that we will get out of the relegation zone,” Ouna stated.Wazito was the better side in the opening minutes of the game with Rooney Onyando down the right causing Mathare United problems. Michael Owino and Musa Masika however failed to utilize his two crosses early in the game.The Slum Boys absorbed the pressure and started to show more ambition going forward. In the 27th minute Fredrick Odhiambo on Wazito goal pulled a superb save to deny David Ochieng who had spotted him off his line and moments later Odhiambo went down to deny Ken Ochieng from a free-kick.The chances were increasingly going Mathare’s way and in the 41st minute they won another free-kick which Ochieng stepped forward to take, Odhiambo on Wazito goal pulled another great save to deny the Slum Boys’ skipper for the second time. The first half ended barren.Wazito made a change after the interval withdrawing midfielder Whyvonne Isuza for Oburu as they looked to add more punch in their forward line.Eight minutes after coming on, Oburu opened the scoring with a good header from a Levin Odhiambo delivery. Two minutes later he got his second with a low finish from inside the penalty area. Mathare pulled one back in 59th minute to complete a six-minute goal fest.The match slowly turned to an end to end affair with both teams raiding with vigor. Mathare missed a couple of chances late as Wazito held on to pick maximum points.The win lifts Wazito to fifth with 41 points while Mathare remains rooted at the bottom.
