Golf was an official sport in the Summer Olympics in Paris in 1900 and then again in St. Louis in 1904 Games.
Then the sport took a 112-year Olympic hiatus, finally returning to Rio in 2016 when Brazil was the host nation.
Justin Rose, who won gold in 2016, also recorded the first-ever Olympics hole-in-one. However, he is not back to defend. The 2016 gold medal winner on the women’s side, Inbee Park, will be back for the top prize.
“I’ve achieved a lot in golf,” said Park, “won a lot of majors, won a lot of tournaments, but winning the gold medal was something really different. I wish a lot of the players think the same and treat Olympics the same. I think it’s definitely something that you should experience.”
The men’s competition will be held July 29-Aug. 1 at Kasumigaseki Country Club in Japan. The women’s competition is Aug. 4-7 at the same locale.
