Kenyan duo of Jonah Ayunga and Johnathan Wafula have respectively penned new deals with Morecambe FC and Matlock Town in England ahead of the new season.Ayunga joins the English League One side from Bristol Rovers who suffered relegation to League Two last season after an underwhelming spell with the club.Speaking to the club’s official portal, Ayunga expressed his delight to join Morecambe which extends his stay in League One adding that head coach Stephen Robinson played a key role in his transfer.“I’m happy to be here, my first day went well and I’m looking to get settled in. It’s happened very quickly, three or four days ago I had no idea it was going to happen!Kenyan-born forward Jonathan Wafula has joined English eighth-tier side Matlock Town FC #StarsAbroad pic.twitter.com/bBhLgiHVpK— Jeff Kinyanjui (@Nyash88) July 26, 2021 “I had a chat with the gaffer here and he’s convinced me to come, he said he’s been aware of me for a couple of years. It was good to make my League One debut last year and get a good amount of games, so knowing what it takes is what I’m going to bring to the team,” said Ayunga.Since graduating from the Brighton & Hove Albion Academy, Ayunga has featured for a number of lower league sides including Havant & Waterlooville, Sutton United and Irish sides Galway United and Sligo Rovers.Ayunga is yet to feature for Harambee Stars but earned a call up to the Emerging Stars squad that faced Mauritius in the Africa U23 Cup of Nations Qualifier but failed to feature due to an injury.Wafula on the other hand reunites with Matlock Town from Guiseley after featuring for the side back in the 2018-2019 season following his short loan stint before being recalled by his then parent club Boston United. The Big Interview with England-based Kenyan striker Jonathan WafulaThe versatile midfielder will play alongside familiar teammates and is eager to hit the ground running with Matlock having set his sights on securing promotion from Northern Premier League Premier Division.Kenyan-born forward Jonathan Wafula has joined English eighth-tier side Matlock Town FC #StarsAbroad pic.twitter.com/bBhLgiHVpK— Jeff Kinyanjui (@Nyash88) July 26, 2021 “I’ve played with the likes of Ryan Qualter and Alex Byrne and having played for Guiseley against Matlock last season, I could see what a good side Matlock looked. If it wasn’t for the early sending off, I reckon Matlock would have won. “I enjoyed it when I was here before, there’s some very good players now and I can’t wait to get started. I’ve come here to win games, I want to help Matlock win promotion, I don’t want to play in a struggling side,” said Wafula. The 27-year-old was born in Kenya but the family relocated to England at the age of 10 and has featured for a number of clubs including Northampton Town, Worksop Town, Gainsborough Trinity and Boston United.
