Former President Donald Trump targeted by protesters at Winged Foot Golf Club

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Former President Donald Trump was the target of protesters Wednesday at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, where he was reportedly being honored at a tribute banquet.

Trump was being recognized at the club Wednesday evening, after playing a round of golf there in the afternoon, according to media reports. His visit to Westchester County this week also includes a Republican fundraiser on Thursday in Briarcliff Manor, where Trump National Golf Club Westchester is located.

On Wednesday about 20 people, mostly residents of Mamaroneck and Larchmont, held signs and a large banner outside the main entrance to Winged Foot as they protested the tribute to Trump and demonstrated their discontent.

Several members of the town of Mamaroneck Police Department stood near the entrance, but did not interfere with the protesters. Many drivers honked their horns and gave thumbs up in support of the protesters as they drove by.

Several supporters of Trump rolled down their car windows to shout their opposition to the protesters.

“I think there’s nothing honorable about normalizing anything Trump has done,” said Shannon Powell, co-founder of Indivisible Westchester, a local organization that supports progressive political candidates. “He continues to fuel hatred and he continues to be corrupt. It’s all disgusting and I stand with the members of the club who are outraged that such an event is happening here.”

Protester Amy Reich of New Rochelle held a sign that read, “Trump for Prison.” She said, “It just makes my heart ache that Winged Foot would do this, that they would host him.”

Some protesters returned to the club in the evening, when club members arrived for the banquet honoring the former president. Protesters booed as cars pulled into the country club.

Winged Foot officials could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday evening.

Trump is scheduled to be in Briarcliff Manor for Thursday’s fundraiser, which will benefit the New York Republican State Committee. Tickets for the fundraiser reception were starting at $1,000 per person, while a ticket that’s paired with a photo opportunity with Trump cost $5,000 per couple.

Access to the reception plus a roundtable and a photo opportunity was going for $25,000 per couple, according to the invitation.
