HARRISON, New York — If the theme for Wednesday’s Round of 64 at the 121st U.S. Women’s Amateur was upsets, the theme for Thursday morning’s Round of 32 is lopsided victories.
Of the 16 matches, only one of the first five made it to the 17th hole, where Emilia Migliaccio – the former Wake Forest star turned Golf Channel intern who commentated on-air after her win yesterday – lost to Stanford junior Brooke Seay, 2 and 1. Only five matches went the full 18 holes.
Michigan junior Hailey Borja started the day with a 3-and-2 victory over Kentucky junior Marissa Wenzler, who dispatched top-seed Rachel Kuehn yesterday, with five birdies and two doubles. Michigan State sophomore Valentina Rossi followed suit with a 4-and-3 win over Mississippi State grad student Valeria Mendizabal, and Auburn commit Katie Cranston one-upped them all with a 5-and-4 shellacking of Sacramento State’s Tess Blair.
Arizona’s Yu-Chiang (Vivian) Hou had the biggest margin of victory after her dominant 8-and-7 performance against Bibilani Liu. Rachel Heck, the 2020 NCAA individual champion was 7-up through 11 holes on Grace Kim and finished the job, 7 and 6.
The afternoon Round of 16 begins at 1 p.m. ET, with coverage on Peacock.
