Mathare dealt hefty injury blow with four games to go

Mathare United have been dealt a hefty injury blow in their quest to evade relegation as experienced defender David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng’ is set to miss a couple of the team’s last four fixtures after the player pulled his hamstring on Wednesday. In the stunning 2-3 comeback win against Kariobangi Sharks, Cheche was forced off early in the second period of the Slum Derby held at Thika Stadium after picking up the injury. In a statement on their official social media portals, club doctor Wycliffe Omom, while expressing a bit of a relief on the extent of the injury, confirmed that the defender suffered a grade 1 hamstring tear and has consequently been ruled out of their next game against Nairobi City Stars.“It is a grade 1 tear on his left hamstring which isn’t as severe as we initially thought. We will have to assess him, take him through a bit of rehabilitation for at least a week before we can do further tests and give a definitive answer on the time he will miss,” the club doctor is quoted on the statement.55’| Sub @MathareUtd Lennox Ogutu in for injured David OchiengSharks 2-1 Mathare#BKPL pic.twitter.com/y49A7ep3TC— Betking Kenya Premier League (@Officialfkfpl) August 4, 2021 Cheche on his part rued picking up an injury but expressed optimism in making a return soon enough.“Happy we won against a very talented Kariobangi Sharks side, unfortunate to have picked up a hamstring injury yesterday, will be back soon,” he posted on his social media page. While Cheche’s exact return date is yet to be known, the club doctor confirmed that the former AFC Leopards defender will not make the squad that will face Nairobi City Stars on Saturday. After the morale-boosting back to back wins over Sofapaka and Sharks, Mathare currently find themselves out of last place and into 15th position on 21 points, level on points with Western Stima and one ahead of last-placed Vihiga United. In terms of the relegation fight, Mathare also have a strong chance of maintaining their top-flight status as, out of the four bottom teams that are staring at relegation, it is only them who have four matches to play. The rest have three left.
