Official: Kenyan Premier League sponsor terminates contract

The Football Kenya Federation Premier League is once again in search of a new title sponsor after Football Kenya Federation (FKF) officially announced that they have reached a mutual agreement to terminate the existing sponsorship for the top tier league and the Division One league. In the lead up to the start of the 2020/2021 season, back in July 2020, persisting troubles of finding a new title sponsor seemed to have been a thing of the past when FKF announced that it had entered into a five year deal worth 1.2B with the gaming company. However, barely one season into the contract, the league is back hunting for a sponsor after the parting of ways.In a statement put out on Friday afternoon, FKF confirmed the official dissociation with the sponsors without stating the exact reason as to why they withdrew the sponsorship.“The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) jointly announces that we have reached a mutual agreement to terminate our existing sponsorship contracts for the Kenya Premier League (KPL) and Division One League,” the statement read.Confirmed. Under the deal with the Nigerian-based operator, each club was supposed to be receiving Ksh. 8M per year in a five year deal worth a total of 1.2B.It has not been smooth sailing even with the sponsorship. Recently, two of the countryʻs biggest clubs, Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards cited non payment of league grants as one of the reasons for not honouring the Mashemeji Derby fixture. With the tough economic times being experienced due to disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic and high taxes imposed by the government on gaming platforms that normally sponsor the league, the search for the next sponsor is on.
