Bryson DeChambeau and Harris English were in the final group at the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational on Sunday, each in search of his third win this season.
But the back nine at TPC Southwind left them befuddled.
DeChambeau drove it in the water on 10 and ended up with bogey. He overshot the green on 11 and rinsed his ball again, leading to a double bogey. He put the finishing touches on his Sunday 74 by lipping out a par putt on 18.
Meanwhile, English doubled the 11th and the 14th, bogeyed the 16th and needed a 10 footer on 18 for birdie to get into a playoff but missed it right, giving him a 73 to close. He had led by as many as three on Sunday.
The 155-yard par-3 11th was the most difficult hole on Sunday. Si Woo Kim rinsed five balls in the water and took a 13 there.
Multiple miscues opened the door for Hideki Matsuyama, Sam Burns and Abraham Ancer, who made a three-way playoff out of the wreckage.
Matsuyama, who fired a 63 for the best round on Sunday, started the day nine back and finished well before the others. On the first playoff hole, he had the best look but could only watch as his birdie putt lipped out.
They played the 18th again, where Ancer and Burns each threw a dart into the green, with Burns getting inside Ancer, each about four feet away. Those were the two closest approach shots to the 18th on Sunday.
Ancer made his for birdie, while Burns, facing pretty much the same putt, lipped his out around the right side.
Ancer earned his first PGA Tour win in his 121st start.
