David Luiz: ‘I left Arsenal because I want to win trophies now’

Arsenal ended their last Premier League campaign on a sore note, as they won’t play European football for the first time in 25 years. The Edu-Arteta duo decided it’s time to rebuild, and for the 34-year old David Luiz, that meant ‘goodbye’. The Gunners wanted to try out some fresh blood and the Brazilian wanted to win trophies now, so the feeling about his departure was mutual. In an interview with Sportsmail, former Benfica, Chelsea, PSG and Arsenal player talked about the reasons he left the Emirates, as well as his time with Chelsea and criticism from the British pundits. “Both of us decided to split. I came for two years and the aim was to win something, which I did, the FA Cup and Community Shield. Now, I think the club has a different project for the long term. They have different ideas. My idea is to win, win, win as soon as possible” explained the Brazilian his split with Arsenal. The Premier League is back! Can anyone de-throne the Citizens?Even thou Luiz has trophies with every club he has played, from Portugal, over France to England, the Brazilian still finds it laughable when others question his style of play or his performances. “It is funny, some people talk about how to win the Premier League, but they have never won it. Jamie Carragher never won the Premier League. They talk and say, “This player is not right for this league”. Yet I won the league. These people have forgotten the past. You cannot say, “David is a player who never won, you won’t win anything with David”. That is not true! You have to base your opinion on something real, not something fake” said Luiz about his critics. Gunners’ wonderkid, England international in his prime, skilful, experienced, professional – and unwantedOne of the most famous stories is the one about another trophy he won: The Champions League in 2011, with an injured right hamstring (nine-inch tear). He claims that it was a huge decision for him, as things could have gone in complete different direction, and he could have ended as the guilty party. Instead, he played 120 minutes and even scored a penalty. “I perhaps should not have played. Roman Abramovich spoke to me on the day of the game and asked, “How is your leg?” I told him, “It does not matter, I play with my head and my heart”. ‘He said, “Go away, I don’t want to see your face, I am so nervous!” I said to him, “Don’t worry, we will win”. But it could have gone badly wrong. Imagine if I’d been forced off after 10 minutes, or I made a mistake for a goal because I could not run? It was a big, big decision. But I was the only Brazilian in this game, that meant a lot. I had many things in my head trying to block out the pain — the dream, the love, the adrenalin. After the game, with the trophy, no one cared about my leg, not even me” admitted the Brazilian.Luiz loses it: Brazilian doesn’t want to stay at EmiratesSpeaking about his former clubs, Luiz is happy to see both Chelsea and PSG having a great transfer window. “Romelu deserves this move. I remember the day he missed the deciding penalty against Bayern Munich in the Super Cup in 2013 and he was so sad, just a young boy. But he is not a kid now, he is a real man. I think he will prove to be amazing for Chelsea. Messi is a nightmare, it is better not to play against him!” says Luiz.BRENTFORD – ARSENALThe Brazilian remains at his home in Sao Paolo, with his recently born baby-daughter and is looking for the right move, as current offers from various parts of the world “didn’t not touch my heart.  I want to stay at a high level. Maybe that will be in the Premier League” teases Luiz.
