Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayern Munich served up a great match to kick off the new Bundesliga season. Two old rivals, cheered by a big post-covid crowd at Borussia Park, dished out an entertaining show of attacking football in what was Julian Nagelsmann competitive debut on Bayern’s bench. Still, despite all the action, neither team could squeeze three points out of this encounter.Despite best efforts from Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer, Polish goal machine Robert Lewandowski still managed to get on the scoresheet and cancel out early hosts’ opening goal in a top-drawer match that started the 2021/22 Bundesliga campaign.Alassane Plea scores the opening goal of the Bundesliga season against defending champions Bayern Munich ✨ pic.twitter.com/NhDXgIhINU— B/R Football (@brfootball) August 13, 2021 The hosts started brightly and stunned the champions when they took the lead through their French attacker Alassane Plea. However, that goal came as a wake-up call for the Munich side. Lewandowski and goalkeeper Sommer had a real showdown as the Swiss goalie managed to save a couple of the Pole’s shots that looked destined for the net.But not even in-form Switzerland international could do much when Lewa met a corner with a classy side-footed volley to make it 1-1.Yann Sommer made eight saves against Bayern, no goalkeeper in Europe’s top five leagues has made more in a single game so far in 2021/22.*pretends to be shocked* pic.twitter.com/XuSDwqfvLc— Squawka Football (@Squawka) August 13, 2021 Lewandowski and Sommer were the standout performers as all other players almost stood and watched in awe as the Swiss kept another Lewandowski low shot out with his outstretched leg. But it wasn’t only the visitors who searched for goals. Young Austrian midfielder Hannes Wolf has had a wicked low shot tipped just wide by the alert Manuel Neuer as the match entered its final 20 minutes with the score locked at 1-1.The hosts have had their best chance of the match as they strung a beautiful team move that ended with a timely low cross for the onrushing Marcus Thuram. The Frenchman slid towards the ball but somehow managed to miskick it and it rolled harmlessly wide.Bayern applied late pressure, but Alphonso Davies, Kingsley Coman and Thomas Muller couldn’t find a dramatic late winner that’s become so typical of the Bavarian club over the decades. When Joshua Kimmich dragged his injury-time effort wide, it was clear that a victory is beyond the Bundesliga holders.Water is wet 🌊Sun is hot 🌞Robert Lewandowski has scored Bayern Munich’s first Bundesliga goal of the season ⚽ pic.twitter.com/Z896PyoQrW— Goal (@goal) August 13, 2021 This match meant that Bayern are yet to register any kind of win under their new boss – after enduring a poor pre-season period. The wait continues – but at least they’ve still got their goalscorer Lewandowski who never seems to have a day off.BUNDESLIGA – Round 1FridayBorussia Monchengladbach – Bayern 1-1 (1-1)/Plea 10 – Lewandowski 42/Saturday16.30: (3.10) Augsburg (3.40) Hoffenheim (2.30)16.30: (2.85) Bielefeld (3.20) Freiburg (2.55)16.30: (1.93) Stuttgart (3.50) Greuther Furth (4.00)16.30: (2.70) Union Berlin (3.25) Leverkusen (2.65)16.30: (1.65) Wolfsburg (3.80) Bochum (5.50)19.30: (1.50) Dortmund (4.50) Eintr.Frankfurt (6.00)Sunday16.30: (7.50) Mainz (4.50) RB Leipzig (1.43)18.30: (2.75) Koln (3.05) Hertha (2.75)
