Okumu gets first taste of victory in Belgium

Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu managed to get his first taste of victory in the Belgian top flight after his KAA Gent side recorded a 2-0 victory against KV Mechelen in a league match played on Sunday evening at Ghelamco Arena.Ever since making his move from Swedish side IF Elfsborg to Gent back in June, the Kenyan international has had to endure a series of unfortunate happenings that have seen him fail to record a win in the opening three league matches he has featured in, the club collecting only one point from the available nine up for grabs. Two wins in a row! ✅✅Let’s go for more!🙌🏼💯 #gntkvm #kaagent #COBW pic.twitter.com/1HgkKjAheY— KAA Gent (@KAAGent) August 15, 2021 In what now appears to be a turn of fortunes for the former Chemelil Sugar defender who got his first goal with the club that sent Gent through to the UEFA Europa Conference League playoff round, Okumu recorded his first win in the league after four attempts.Despite helping his side progress to the playoff round of the Conference League in the team’s last outing, Okumu was relegated to the bench where he got a six-minute cameo after being introduced on the 84th minute when Gent were leading by a solitary goal.Okumu rescues Gent in Europa Conference LeagueHis defensive partner, Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui gave his team a first half lead when he scored in the 28th minute after being set up by midfielder Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe.Brought on to consolidate the result, Okumu saw his side secure the three points when Angolan international Nurio Fortuna doubled his side’s lead deep into stoppage time with a strike in the second minute of stoppage time.Following their first win after four games, Gent jumped upto 13th place on the log on four points.
