Not enough space at the Bridge: Emerson Palmieri heads out on a season-long loan with Lyon

Chelsea have loaned out full-back Emerson Palmieri to Lyon for the rest of the current 2020/21 season, with the Italy international not in Thomas Tuchel’s first-team plans. The 27-year-old has struggled to play regularly for the Blues ever since arriving at the club in January 2018 and now finds himself behind both Marcos Alonso and Ben Chilwell for a place at left-back.Tuchel has built such a strong side that not even a European champion with Italy cannot be guaranteed a place in the starting eleven at Stamford Bridge. Sunday, 14.00: (1.65) Olympique Lyon (3.80) Clermont (5.50)With his first-team opportunities almost eradicated, he has been regularly linked with a move back to Italy, but he will now ply his trade in France instead, joining Peter Bosz’s side for the rest of the campaign.Emerson did actually come off the bench for four minutes in Chelsea’s first game of the Premier League season – a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace – although this was clearly not a sign of more chances to come under Tuchel.Lyon will welcome this arrival after their poor start to the new season that’s already put pressure on their German coach Peter Bosz and sporting director Juninho.𝘽𝙚𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙪𝙩𝙤 @emersonpalmieri ! 🇮🇹#Emerson2022 pic.twitter.com/eBm2Oqqayu— Olympique Lyonnais (@OL) August 19, 2021 Lyon made the news for all the wrong reasons last weekend as they suspended their Brazilian defender Marcelo due to “inappropriate behaviour” after the team lost heavily to Angers on Sunday. The 34-year-old Brazilian scored an own goal in a 3-0 loss to Angers that left Lyon with just one point from two matches.Bosz, dismissed by German team Bayer Leverkusen in March, said after Sunday’s match that his players were “doing their own thing” and that he “didn’t see a team that wanted to win.” Will the arrival of a successful footballer do anything to improve Lyon’s fortunes? Bosz is probably praying for it.
