CAF requests the British Government to grant an exemption to African players for World Cup qualifiers

The Confederation of African football will not give up so easily, after the Premier League banned players for international matches played in so-called “red-list” countries next month. The League announced on Tuesday a blanket for the September fixtures, amid frustration that players who travelled to red-list countries would have to follow coronavirus quarantine regulations upon their return, ruling them out of several of their club’s matches.FIFA president intervenes after clubs announce that they won’t let players represent their countriesAnd with huge number of African players in the Premier League (not to mention Argentina and Brazil), the African football governinig body made a statement regarding this decision.„CAF has noted the current circumstances in place in Britain regarding the lack of sporting exemptions for players returning from several African countries after the international window next week. CAF, acting on behalf of all African Member Associations, African players and fans, has urged the British Government to urgently provide the required exemptions to enable African players to compete for their countries in the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers“ reads the statement.(2.50) EL GEISH (3.20) EL MASRY CLUB (2.70)CAF also noted that similar exemptions were granted by the British Government to enable the attendance of delegations and officials, amongst others, at the finals of the European Championship held less than two months ago. CAF empasised that the circumstances in the African countries on the red list i’n many cases are in fact less severe than other countries not currently on this list’. „Furthermore, CAF would like to reiterate that the upcoming matches will be delivered under the strict protocols developed by FIFA and applied across the world, as was the case in previous windows and continental tournaments successfully delivered without any incidents.
