East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, site of this week’s Tour Championship as the final event of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs, is the oldest golf course in Atlanta.
The course at East Lake originally was laid out by Tom Bendelow in 1904, but legendary architect Donald Ross revamped the layout in 1913, establishing the track as it’s still played today. Rees Jones restored the Ross layout in 1994.
For years the course finished on a par 3, but the club reversed the nine in 2016 and that previous closing hole is now No. 9.
East Lake ranks No. 6 on Golfweek’s Best list of private courses in Georgia. It also ties for No. 87 on Golfweek’s Best Classic Courses list for all layouts built before 1960 in the U.S.
The layout plays as a par 72 for members, but two of the normal par 5s (Nos. 1 and 14) will play as par 4s for the Tour Championship, setting a par of 70 at 7,346 yards.
