County funded side Vihiga United are set to resume training on Monday ahead of the team’s bid to maintain their top-flight status in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL).In the run in to the 2020/2021 season, Vihiga handed themselves a lifeline when they recorded consecutive wins in their last two matches of the season to move from last place on the log to finishing in 16th position – a promotion/relegation playoff spot – as opposed to the automatic relegation that would have come with a last-place finish.Since the league’s conclusion back on 22nd August, the team took a mini rest after the gruelling 2020/2021 campaign came to an end but the team is expected to resume training ahead of their first leg tie with Kenya Police set for 12th September.FKF set promotion play-off dates for Kenya Police and Vihiga United“Before we knew the official dates, we trained for about three days after the last fixture of the season and we had to break for a bit due to some internal issues and also the fact that there had not been official confirmation as to when the playoff matches would be played. We are however set to resume training on Monday with the boys in preparation for the first leg,” assistant coach Samuel Twago told Mozzart Sport.Back in the premature 2019/2020 season, the currently John Mururi coached side became the first National Super League (NSL) side to gain promotion through the playoffs after edging Kisumu All-Stars 5-3 on post-match penalties following a 3-3 aggregate score in two legs.BREAKING: Vihiga United promoted to the FKF Premier League after beating Kisumu All Stars through post match penalties. This is the first time A National Super League has been promoted to the FKF Premier League via playoffs. pic.twitter.com/6igVrZRbIO— Ole Teya (@Kevin_teya) November 4, 2020 Against Police who finished 3rd in the NSL to book the date with the Vihiga County funded side, Vihiga will look to cancel that record as they seek to maintain their top-flight status for another consecutive year.
