How is this even possible?! Sevilla sack their $14.85 million midfielder because he wouldn’t stay fit

You’d think that a French 24-year-old footballer, who was signed by one of Spain’s most successful clubs, has the world at his feet. Young, successful, wealthy, athletic… Most of them are, to be honest. But Joris Gnagnon is not one of them.Wednesday, 20.30: (1.70) Sevilla (3.60) Valencia (5.30)French central defender joined Sevilla from Stade Rennais for $14.85 million three years ago and signed a five-year contract to become the next big thing. But his contract was terminated by the Spanish club because Joris repeatedly failed to maintain his fitness and act professionally.Sevilla tried everything they could to protect their investment. When coach Julen Lopetegui arrived to the club, he didn’t like the Frenchman’s behaviour and quickly decided that the former Rennes youngster wouldn’t feature in his plans. His horrendous tackle in a 2019 friendly match against Liverpool all but condemned Gnagnon to a hastened departure from the Andalusian club.Me dió la mejor noche del 2019.DON JORIS GNAGNON. pic.twitter.com/rOl6jU5Pmg— MINI TROYI (@JA_Troya) September 20, 2021 After making a grand total of 17 appearances in his first season at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, Gnagnon was loaned back to his old club to get some first-team football and, above all, shed his extra weight and return to full fitness. Despite publishing videos of his alleged hard work in the gym, the troubled Frenchman reported back to Sevilla – still visibly overweight. Coach Lopetegui saw him and decided right there and then that it was enough. After consulting their legal team, Sevilla terminated Gnagnon’s contract one-sidedly and stop wasting money on a player that isn’t even fit enough to be called a professional footballer.Tough times for the Rennes boy (©AFP)Now what? Our guess is as good as yours. We’ll see if there is a club willing to take their chance on a talented, but grossly unprofessional footballer.
