Here we go again: Mourinho storms out of the press conference after a derby defeat

We are only into the sixth week of Serie A season, and already we have a Jose Mourinho theatre all over again. The ‘Special One’ lost his first big match since taking over Roma – a derby with arch rivals Lazio, and after the match he made quite a spectacle. First he gathered his players at the middle of the pitch to give them a motivational speech second after the game finished, then he went over to do the post-game interview, where he blamed the referee and VAR for the loss, and in the end, after arguing with some journalists, he stormed out of the press conference in anger. Lazio prevail in a thrilling Derby Della Capitale! Mourinho fails at his most important exam as Roma managerBut what happened? Well, the first issue he had with the referees was in previous match, in which Roma defeated Udinese, but his captain and best player Lorenzo Pellegrini got the red card and was suspended for this match. And then, according to Mourinho, during the derby, Lucas Leiva did not receive a second yellow card for a similar foul made by Pellegrini a week ago.“Let me say something positive first, which is that Italian football has improved a great deal from 10 years ago. The quality of football, the attacking approach, the desire to win, has all improved. Unfortunately, a fantastic game was ruined by the referee and VAR, who were not at the right level for this match. The second goal could’ve been 1-1, it went to 2-0. The second yellow for Lucas Leiva was important too, because playing against 10 men makes a big difference. Pellegrini got a red, today Leiva got nothing. Evidently Italian football really has changed if after a game like this you ask me about the football and not the referees…We deserved a better result and the referee was decisive in this match” explained Mourinho. However, La Gazzetta dello Sport published a video on Monday, which shows that Mourinho was arguing with a Lega Serie A delegate. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Lazio decided to avoid any unnecessary contact between players, coaches and the press, so they made a rule that the journalists send their questions to the press officer and that he ask the coaches all the questions. Mourinho obviously didn’t want to comply with Lazio rules (they were formally a hosts in this game), so he left. When Mourinho came to Roma, he made a squad assessment and decided that his former Chelsea player Pedro is no longer available. In fact, he was so keen to get rid of him, that the club allowed the Spaniard to leave the club on a free and join non other than Lazio. Off course, karma did it’s part and Pedro made history as only the third man to score for both Roma and Lazio in the Derby della Capitale, but also take revenge on the club that got rid of him quickly. “It was a special derby for me. I am very happy with this victory, it’s important for us and the fans, as we were coming off some games that hadn’t gone so well. I feel very happy at Lazio, I always said that, it’s like a big family. The Rome Derby is among the best in the world, because people in the city talk about it all week. They stop you in the street, remind you to do well, how important this game is for the city. It’s true I have played many derbies, but this is one of the best in the world for me” Pedro told DAZN.
