The new season is not so new anymore. Domestic leagues are gathering pace – and so are the continental competitions in Europe. This week, we’ll be tuning into the second matchday of the three UEFA tournaments: Champions League, Europa League and the latest one: the Europa Conference League. There’s no doubt as to which match will be the most-watched one. It’s the Group A clash between two clubs who met in last season’s semi-final. It’s Paris Saint-Germain versus Manchester City at Parc des Princes. You can read all about it on Mozzart Sport Kenya. Here we’ll take a look at the best of the rest! Also in Group A, German outfit Leipzig will host Club Brugge of Belgium. The Red Bulls endured a torrid time in Matchday 1 when they travelled to the Etihad Stadium. Although their French forward Christopher Nkunku scored an impressive hat-trick, Pep Guardiola’s men made sure Nkunku’s triple is no more than a fancy stat by scoring six. Club Brugge, by contrast, had an encouraging start to their UCL campaign. They managed to hold PSG to a respectable draw.
In Group B, there will be a couple of clashes between four so-called traditional superpowers. Milan, who finally returned to this competition after a seven-year absence. They play at home against Atletico Madrid. Ironically, the last team they faced before their long absence was the Rojiblancos. Meanwhile, in Portugal, FC Porto host Liverpool. This will be the fifth time that the Anfield club have faced FC Porto in the UCL since Jurgen Klopp became the Reds boss, winning three of those. Liverpool scored more goals and kept more clean sheets against the Dragons than any other opponent in the competition under the German’s leadership.
In Group C, Dutch champions and four-time Champions League winners Ajax host Besiktas, the champions of Turkey. The Amsterdam club kicked off the group stage with a tricky test away at Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon, but they came out swinging with Sebastian Haller scoring four goals in Lisbon. They could take full control of the group if they succeed in inflicting another defeat on Besiktas, who lost to Borussia Dortmund two weeks ago. The Turks will likely miss their recent signing from Barcelona Miralem Pjanic due to injury. As for Dortmund, they are still unsure whether their main attackers Erling Haaland and Marco Reus would be fit to start the match against Sporting at Signal Iduna Park.
Finally, in Group D, two former winners face clubs from Eastern Europe. Inter travel to Ukraine to face Shakhtar Donetsk, a club managed by Roberto De Zerbi, the coach who was once a young player on the books of Inter’s biggest rivals AC Milan. Over in Spain, Real Madrid will have an easy game as they host the competition new boys Sheriff of Moldova.
