It is a battle between three-time Women Premier League champions, Vihiga Queens, who come to the match on a mission to clinch a local trophy after missing out on the league title, against a Ulinzi Starlets’ team equally eager to clinch the title. The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women’s Cup kicks off at 2 pm on Saturday 2 October at the Nakuru Show Grounds and at the end of the match, the first ever champion will be crowned. Their last outing on the same grounds were not so fruitful. The Boniface Nyamunyamuh coached Vihiga Queens, then under coach Alex Alumira, fell in the WPL playoff semis to Gaspo Women. The military side had bowed out of the title race a stage earlier, losing in the quarters to fellow debutants Nakuru Queens. “We are up against a strong side. They may not be experienced in the league but they have players who have featured in the league for years with other teams. It is a tough match, just like any other final would be,”Vihiga Queens and Ulinzi Starlets chase first local title of the season”In the semis against Kayole Starlets, we did not get a big challenge that would help me rate the team’s preparedness for this encounter. However, we have taken time to work on our defence as we are up against a formidable attacking line,””It will also be important for us to convert our chances and do so early in the match. We missed a few sitters in the semi-final and that would be costly at this level,” said Nyamunyamuh. They finished the Zone A, regular league, in third place behind league champions Thika Queens and Gaspo Women. In the Cup quarter, they faced off with Zetech Sparks before humiliating Kisumu All Starlets on home ground to book a final berth. “Facing a team like Vihiga Queens is not easy. They have a good squad and are probably the most on-form team coming off the CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA Zonal qualifiers where they won.
