EXCLUSIVE: One on One with Gor Mahia head coach Mark Harrison

Touch, pass. Touch, look up, find someone in space, pass. If you do not know by now, that is what the country’s most decorated club – Gor Mahia – are trying to adopt as their style of play ever since new Englishman head coach Mark Harrison took over at the club with five games left to the end of the 2020/2021 Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) season.“I am after winning games and trophies but I want to do it in style by playing an entertaining brand of football. I am certainly not a long ball merchant by any means, that is not my game. I like my players to play with flair, to feel free and to go out there and express themselves. I do not want my team to play with any fear, just go out, enjoy and entertain,” the head coach said shortly after being unveiled at the 19-time champions back in August. Our new coach Mark Harrison officially unveiled… welcome to Gor Mahia coach Harrison.##Sirkal pic.twitter.com/lS6fYXeamy— GOR MAHIA FC (@OfficialGMFC) August 2, 2021 True to his word since arrival, the coach has tried to play football as he promised. Football played from the back with players expected to stay composed with the ball at their feet and to quickly drop into their shape without it. Importantly, keeping it simple cannot be stressed enough by the coach. No forced play and staying utterly patient when up against a resolute opposition.Since his arrival at the green army, the tactician has lost two games in the seven that he has overseen. One against Nzoia Sugar in the final fixture of the 2020/2021 season and the other in the curtain raising Super Cup tie against reigning league champions Tusker where they lost 8-7 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in normal time. But when the 2020/2021 FKFPL season started, the Englishman got off to the perfect start as Benson Omalla’s brace inspired Gor to a 2-1 win against last season’s runners up KCB. After a disappointing last season where the club finished in 8th position for the first time in over ten years, the coach will likely be hoping to build on that important win in the opening league fixture.⚽️| After signing a would be six month deal in Sweden, Omala cut short his stay after just one month, a dark time in his life. This season though, the striker is eyeing another chance at redemption.Full Story 📩#BensonOmala #GorMahia #Sirkalhttps://t.co/kXwJbBFhwR— Mozzart Sport Kenya (@MozzartSportKe) October 3, 2021 Ahead of the 33 remaining games, Mozzart Sport caught up with the coach on a one on one interview to find out what the season ahead holds for a Gor Mahia side that will have to face a myriad of challenges especially in the continental front where an earlier FIFA ban ensured the club could not register their new signings, leaving them with only around seventeen players to do an almost impossible task of making it to the group stages where the demanding fan base want to see their side.Still early days at Gor Mahia, how has it been since you came and what are your initial evaluations?Kenya is great with really good people. I have settled in nicely as there have been no issues at all. We have had a good start obviously to the season, which has not been easy for us with everything going on at the club that is not a secret. We entered into the game against Tusker on the back of ten days training and then three days later we had to play KCB. Basically we drew with Tusker – yeah we lost on penalties and that’s bye and bye – and then we got a good result against KCB which was great so yeah a good start. We are in three competitions and it is going be a tough season.FT: Gor Mahia 2 KCB 1 ⚽️ – Benson Omalla with a brace Three important points in the bag 💪💪#Sirkal | #Betsafe pic.twitter.com/16LmhC3ehm— GOR MAHIA FC (@OfficialGMFC) September 25, 2021 Last season was, by a mile, Gor Mahia’s worst campaign in over ten years. What is the hope for the record Kenyan champions? We have signed some decent players you know. I think our squad now is pretty good and is capable of competing with the top teams so I will be disappointed at the end of the season if we are not challenging for the championship. We need to take it right to the wire and that is my ambition. I want to win the league but it is not going to be easy by any means when you got teams like Tusker, KCB and Bandari who have strengthened their squads and are all competitive but we are going to be up there challenging I’m sure.#Sirkal | #Betsafe pic.twitter.com/jvqxmdqTif— GOR MAHIA FC (@OfficialGMFC) September 24, 2021 There are probably many things that informed your decision to come to Gor. At the end of your reign, what would you like to be your legacy? I’d like to leave here with the championship title. I think that is the main goal – winning the league. I mean anyone can win cups, cup games are a bit of a lottery. At the end of the day you can play a team at the bottom of the league, you can play a team in a league below you and you can get beaten because it is a one off game. Leagues are won over 34 games and I think that is the important task for me. Obviously I’d like to win CAF (laughs) but that is a tall order. Unfortunately, we are entering into the CAF games with around 17-18 players available because of the issues we had.Gor fans associate themselves with the best. They expect their team to get to the CAF group stages. How are you going to navigate this challenge with the player shortage you have?It is not going to be easy, it is going to be very demanding on the players we have available. Obviously, if we can get through to the group then we can have our new players involved. But we have to get over Al-Ahly Merowe (Sudan) and if we do that, then we have another game.OFFICIALWe take on the winner between South Sudanese side Atlabara FC and Al Ahly Merowe from Sudan in second round of CAF Confed Cup preliminary stage. #Sirkal pic.twitter.com/osImDsl0JW— GOR MAHIA FC (@OfficialGMFC) August 13, 2021 We need a little bit of luck in the draw. First, the players will have to be on their A-game that is for sure. They will need to produce a 100% performance for us to be successful. It is going to be difficult but we have to get our heads down and try. If we are successful and get through to the group stages that will be a big big thing because it is not going to be easy. How do you prepare against such unknown opposition with difficulty in getting clips to study how they play?We have got a little bit of info on them and very little video footage. It is very difficult when you do not know the opposition. We have to protect ourselves a little bit going into the game. If we go gung-ho and crazy, we could get hurt. Tactically, we have to be cautious to start with, assess them the best we can as quickly as possible and take it from there.Coach Mark Harrison’s take on continental matches and his word to fans. #Sirkal pic.twitter.com/qv7F1p3EeI— GOR MAHIA FC (@OfficialGMFC) August 3, 2021 How else do you spend time when not coaching around here?I just normally relax at home. My wife will be joining me in the next few weeks which is a good thing and I am looking forward to her getting here. Normally, I just go to a restaurant, get something to eat and just watch lots of football.
