Mali vs Kenya player ratings: Harambee Stars fail to sparkle

The post-Victor Wanyama era at Harambee Stars and head coach Engin Firat’s first test on his 60-day reign was off to a disastrous start as they were eviscerated 5-0 by Mali in the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Here are the player rating for the Agadir Massacre. Mali whitewash Harambee Stars in AgadirIan Otieno – 2The former AFC Leopards goalkeeper came into the tie after missing Zesco United’s clash against Kafue Celtic due to indiscipline issues but could not be faulted for the goals he conceded as his backline left him exposed leading to him being hauled off at halftime.Joash Onyango – 1The tough-tackling defender baffled many when he made the lineup after failing for feature for any of Simba’s league games his season as he was slotted at right back at the expense of Daniel Sakari who had shown some progress. Onyango only lasted only 34 minutes as Moussa Djenepo handed him a torrid night.H.TMali 🇲🇱 4-0 🇰🇪 KenyaAdama Traore 8″Ibrahima Kone 22″Ibrahima Kone 36″Ibrahima Kone 45″ pic.twitter.com/7GJWtCSa88— Harambee Stars (@Harambee__Stars) October 7, 2021 Joseph Okumu – 2The centre back has not been in perfect form in the qualifying campaign so far as he ceded a cheap corner that led to Rwanda’s equalizer and cheaply conceded possession that led to Mali’s opener in the clash. He is yet to forge a solid partnership with Johnstone Omuruwa but their young age leaves room for that.Johnstone Omuruwa – 4Despite being part of a backline that shipped in five goals, Omuruwa was the standout performer in the game as he made numerous tackles in the nick of time to bail out Stars on a number of occasions.Eric Ouma – 2The wingback was deployed as a left-winger for large spells of the game and did well to beat his marker on several occasions but his final ball delivery was wanting as he failed to trouble the Mali defence with his crosses.Kenneth Muguna – 2Muguna failed to exert his dominance in the middle of the pack as he was given little room by the Mali players who were quick to stifle any build up that would lead to an attack. He sometimes resorted to long balls which were comfortably dealt with by the sturdy Mali defenders. Richard Odada – 1After impressive performances against Rwanda and Uganda, Odada looked a pale shadow of himself with Mali seemed to have done their homework against him. Henry Meja – 1The forward was played out of position and was all over the field as he lacked positional discipline. He gave the ball away on the left wing despite starting as a right-winger and failed to track back as the build-up play led to the second goal. Lawrence Juma – 1 From obscurity to limelight- the inspiring story of Rooney OnyangoSofapaka’s most priced asset has suffered a tumultuous qualifier campaign as he has been subbed off after 30, 50 and 34 minutes against Uganda, Rwanda and Mali respectively. Harambee Stars have lacked creativity in all games a task which lays with Juma.Abud Omar – 1The left-back started as a winger but after soaking in two early goals he was redeployed to the left-back position and afforded Moussa Doumbia space to drill the final nail in the Harambee Stars coffin. He also needlessly talked himself into the book after Abdalla Hassan conceded a penalty. Here’s our Starting Lineup against Mali 👇🔗 https://t.co/MpM9OxoB8K#Tunaweza pic.twitter.com/8XVJVFuKII— Harambee Stars (@Harambee__Stars) October 7, 2021 Michael Olunga – 2The captain again struggled for Harambee Stars mainly due to lack of service despite coming into the match brimming with confidence after netting five goals for Al Duhail. He missed a sitter in the second half from point black range from Boniface Muchiri’s cross.Faruk Shikalo – 1 Shikalo was a halftime substitute and was another one of those players who have enjoyed little league action coming into the game. He concede a fortuitous own goal and had little to do in the second half as Harambee Stars resorted to damage limitation.##NAJAVA_MECA_5881171##Duke Abuya – 1The midfielder showed flashes of brilliance after he came on but his little 12 minutes on the pitch proved little to have any meaningful effect on the game.Boniface Muchiri – 2 The winger was a bit lively and injected some energy into the game but also gave away the ball on a number of occasions.Abdalla Hassan – 1The first half substitute was played out position despite being a right-back in his formative years and lacked composure as he gave away a penalty 10 minutes after coming on, he was also turned inside out in the build-up to the third goal. A little shuffle at the team hotel as we count hours to the big match 😄What’s your goodwill message?#Tunaweza pic.twitter.com/yk5pnZdxKR— Harambee Stars (@Harambee__Stars) October 7, 2021 Erick Zakayo – 1This was the worst game for a young player to make his debut and his inexperience showed, running all over the field despite replacing Lawrence Juma who was a number 10.
