Mara Sugar FC head coach Steve Biko has thanked his players after they finally earned promotion to the National Super League with a 1-0 win over St. Joseph’s FC in the final match of FKF División One, Zone B League.Ruben Mita’s 68th minute goal is all that the Millers needed to down the Saints at the Awendo Green Stadium, they ended the season with 59 points, seeing off competition from Luanda Villa who ended the season with 58 points in second place.Biko was elated with his team’s run in the league and he reserved praise for his players.”I want to thank my boys for the job well done. Since we took the leadership of the league on week seven, we have led to the end and considering the fact that our team is a very young team, that’s no mean feat. Despite the many challenges like Covid-19, we managed to remain focused and I am really proud of these players for the job they have done,” he told Mozzart Sport.Slip ups towards the end of the season threatened to disrupt the team’s promotion push. They suffered a shocking 2-0 defeat to Kamungei before registering draws against Bungoma Superstars and Tranfoc FC but the tactician didn’t fear that they would miss out on automatic promotion.”I don’t think we were really under pressure because we were playing well but sometimes we were not taking the chances we created. Like in the game against Bungoma Superstars, we had a penalty which we missed, we had two goals wrongly disallowed and so sometimes things just don’t go your way but it doesn’t mean that you play badly or you are under pressure, ” he added.Mara will now take a one-week break after which they will resume training in readiness for the NSL campaign that starts on 6th November.”It has been a rigorous season because we have been playing in midweek and over the weekend and we are now going to break for one week before resume for preparations for life in the NSL,” he added. They join Zone A winners, Naivas FC in the second tier. Luanda Villa and Ss Assad will now face off in the playoff to determine which team books the final NSL slot.
