‘Do I look happy? Don’t ask me silly questions then’

One by one, Newcastle coaching candidates are falling of the list, by their own admission. After Brendan Rodgers, who distanced himself from the possibility, and Jose Mourinho, how said he will remain with Roma, Rangers manager Steven Gerrard was the next one to shout down the idea of taking over Magpies. Former Liverpool great is still under contract with Scottish giants, with whom he had great success. Since his arrival in Glasgow in June 2018, Rangers won 121 of their 187 matches with Gerrard in charge, and won the title after 10 years. ‘They called me inept cabbage head’ – Steve Bruce thinking of retirement after Newcastle jobEverybody knows that former Liverpool midfielder will, at one point, take over a Premier League club, but after his short statement to BT Sports, it seems it won’t be Newcastle. “Do I look happy? Do I look settled? Don’t ask me silly questions then” was his answer when questioned about leaving Rangers post.So far, the bookies have shortened their list to a few coaches: Paulo Fonseca, Frank Lampard, Lucien Favre, Eddie Howe, Roberto Martinez, Antonio Conte, and Unai Emery. British media are reporting than only Fonseca, out of all other candidates was talking to Newcastle representatives, and that he will continue talks in the next few days. That doesn’t mean that others won’t get their chance too, as new owners want to make a serious and detailed process of finding the right man. With this Newcastle team, and with the proper signings in January, new coach must secure Premier League safety first, and then try to at least finish near the middle of the table. New owners are also looking for an experienced manager, but not the one who is only good for avoiding relegations (like Sam Allardyce), but who can use the transfer budget and start to develop  the team. Zidane rejects Newcastle, just like they rejected him in 1996Out of those candidates (Unai Emery is a bit unrealistic target), Lucien Favre is the most experienced, as the Swiss tactician was good in all his teams (Monhengladbach, Dortmund, Nice), but he too is unexperienced in the Premier League. Two popular names with an experience in England are current Belgium manager Roberto Martinez and a free agent Eddie Howe, but they were both relegated from the Premier League (Martinez with Wigan, Howe with Bournemouth).  Frank Lampard did good with limited budget while in Derby County, but failed at Chelsea, while Antonio Conte usually takes the job at the beginning of the season. On top of that, Conte likes a challenge, but this would be really a challenge which would last at least 4 or 5 years. So, the search is ongoing and it will take time for the owners to make a decision.
