There has been a standoff between the Ministry of Sports and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), with the ministry calling for an impromptu inspection of the fooball governing body. A section of Kenyans welcomed the move while others feel it is not warranted as it would occasion a FIFA ban due to government interference, with most Senators who spoke on the floor on Tuesday afternoon nodding to the same sentiments. The risk of banning FKF will put us into a serious problem with FIFA – @scherargei #BungeliveSEN pic.twitter.com/rlqDjMJKVA— Mzalendo (@MzalendoWatch) November 2, 2021 Responding on the floor of the senate to a statement request by Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr, the Chairperson for the committee Senator Johnson Sakaja summoned the CS to appear before it on Thursday, terming the issue at hand as urgent.”We will sign off the letter immediately and ask for the audience of the CS, the Sports Registrar, the PS because it is an urgent matter. If we wait for a week or two, some action that could potentially make our entire country miss out on being part of FIFA can be taken. Any action that can be taken which can cause Kenya to be banned cannot be taken by an individual, that action cannot be taken by a CS or a PS. That’s why I am saying it should not be taken by an individual,” Sakaja said. The inspection team was largely complied of officers from the office of the Director of Criminal Investigations and the National Intelligence Service according to Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr.##NAJAVA_MECA_5949105##Sakaja also noted that although audits are welcome to all federations when a section of the funding or even whole of it comes from the government, they should not be used for other things.”Without being prejudicial as to the action we will take, I want to state that, first of all, from a policy point of view, audits are welcome everywhere but they should not be used as a tool for something else. All Federations must be audited when a section of resources comes from the national government,” he added.A parliamentary committee has summoned Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa to shed light on allegations of irregularly pocketing Sh11 million in allowances from the federation’s accounts. #MaliarSacco pic.twitter.com/RDCigQW63O— Ronoh Cornelius (Kipchumba) (@kipro_hon) October 27, 2021 In a statement request that had the Makueni senator seeking answers on 13 items, top of the list was particulars on disbursements to sports federations, including FKF, and the disparity in records between FKF and the ministry of sports on disbursement from 2019 to date. While the records at the ministry indicate that a total of KSh 433 Million was advanced to the federation for the national teams, FKF records indicate that only 355M was received according to the Senator.
