As the clock struck 00:00hours to usher in Thursday 18 November 2021, the men’s national football team, Harambee Stars, became coach-less after Engin Firat’s 60-day contract officially came to an end.Back on September 19, the Turkish-German tactician was roped into the national side on a surprising two-month contract to try and navigate the Harambee Stars in the remaining four FIFA 2022 Qatar World Cup qualifiers after Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and immediate former head coach Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee parted ways. Eventually, those results saw Kenya missing out on progression to the playoff spot as they finished third in Group E behind qualified Mali and second-placed Uganda with Rwanda finishing bottom of the log.💬 | “We should now focus on building for the future,” ~ Coach Engin Firat pic.twitter.com/IMkqvXyttQ— Harambee Stars (@Harambee__Stars) November 16, 2021 With uncertainty about whether the coach’s contract will be renewed now that there is a different entity in the FKF caretaker committee, Firat has reiterated his desire to stay on with the team’s future looking very promising.“To be honest, I see a big future and potential in this country. When I took the job, I said that if I don’t see any future, then there is no need of staying. But these boys have shown the potential and that is all a coach can ask for and therefore I am interested to stay. Everybody who is not blind can see that this team has a very bright future. Don’t forget all these boys are 20 or 21 years old. At this age, they can still play for 10 more years,” he stated after his last match against Rwanda.
