After making his full Harambee Stars debut in the final 2022 World Cup qualifier double against Uganda and Rwanda, Georgia based defensive midfielder Amos Nondi says he is keen on establishing himself as the national team first choice right back going forward.Nondi was deemed to have been thrown in the deep end when former coach Engin Firat deployed him as the right back in the penultimate round away to Uganda but he proved equal to the challenge. The midfielder who plies his trade with Georgia top flight side Dila Gori looked comfortable in the final round against Rwanda at the Nyayo National Stadium. His impressive show in the two matches left him convinced that he has what it takes to serve the team in the defence going forward although he couldn’t help contain his wish of playing in the midfield, his preferred area of operation. Here’s our starting lineup 👇❌ Eric Ouma and Eric Johanna miss out due to injury✅ Amos Nondi and Anthony Wambani start🔗 https://t.co/TuRj5O157s pic.twitter.com/fUT8YnAcAI— Harambee Stars (@Harambee__Stars) November 11, 2021 “I was comfortable at right back in the two matches. It is common for midfielders to rotate positions and thus, the decision to play me in the defence did not come to me as a surprise. I am always ready to give my best for the national team and should the coach decide that I am the right person for the right back roles, I will be ready to play in the defence,” he said.Stars coaches have in recent years scratched their heads over the right back roles following the decision by former assistant captain David Owino to transition into central defence and Nondi’s versatility could as well be the answer to the challenge. Nondi, a former Gor Mahia player revealed that he was also comfortable in offensive and central defence.” Apart from my preferred role, I have also learnt how to carry the ball forward and to operate at the heart of the defence,” he disclosed.Nondi elated to be back with Harambee StarsBefore Firat threw the diminutive player to the defence, he had tried Joash Onyango and Eric Ouma but the decision to start the former, a natural centre back backfired as he was exposed in the third round of the qualifier away to Mali and was consequently hauled off before halftime.##NAJAVA_MECA_5990958##Firat’s predecessors had initially tried Tusker’s Daniel Sakari with KCB man Baraka Badi and Gor assistant captain Philemon Otieno in solving the national team right back puzzle.Nondi joined Gori in January 2018 after impressing in the third tier side FC Kolketi, a club he had joined in 2017. Prior to turning professional, the youngster had a full season with record champions Gor who promoted him from their junior side shortly after returning from a brief loan stint at the defunct Sony Sugar.
