Victor Wanyama’s CF Montreal ended the season with a trophy after beating FC Toronto in the Canadian Championship (Voyageurs Cup) final on Monday morning to lift the title that comes with continental football.Wanyama skippered the team in the match that they completely dominated but had to wait until the 72nd minute for them to score the all-important goal through Romell Quioto after the visitors had frustrated them for the better part of the match. The title is Montreal’s 11th having won it in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2019. Their triumph sees them qualify for next season’s CONCACAF Champions League.pic.twitter.com/3f6sg3LQzY— Victor Wanyama (@VictorWanyama) November 22, 2021 They missed many opportunities before going ahead and coach Wilfried Nancy spoke about the issue at full time as he expressed his delight at winning the title.“This is the story of our season. We should have scored earlier. I’m happy because we played the way we used to play, offensively and defensively. So I’m happy for the players,” Nancy said after the match. The win is a double blessing for CF Montreal who were last week handed a boost when Wanyama announced that he would be continuing with the club despite interest from his former club Celtic, of Scotland.“I still have a contract here, I love the club and I just want to focus on our task. I will be here next season too. We are happy to have another chance (of reaching the CONCACAF Champions League). Plus, it’s great to be able to play in the Champions League against Latin American teams. I believe that if we go back, we will be able to do better because we have the experience compared to the last time,” Wanyama stated.Kenyan International Victor Wanyama captained CF Montreal as the team won Canadian Championship trophy by edging Toronto FC 1-0 #StarsAbroad pic.twitter.com/wwEw4Xxt2v— Jeff Kinyanjui (@Nyash88) November 22, 2021 The trophy is Wanyama’s first in Montreal colors.
