Vihiga Queens heroine reveals how they capitulated against Rivers Angels in CAF Women’s Champions League

Vihiga Queens forward Violet Wanyonyi has admitted that they didn’t anticipate that Rivers Angels from Nigeria would be their toughest opponent in the inaugural CAF Women Champions League that came to a close in Egypt on Friday.Queens, who represented the CECAFA Region exited the competition in the group stage after winning one and losing their other two group B matches. The Kenya giants started the campaign with a 1-0 loss to eventual winners Mamelodi Sundowns women before beating FAR Rabat of Morocco 2-0 in the second match group assignment. With many expecting them to through to the semis ahead of their final Group assignment against Rivers Angels who had lost their opening two games, Queens suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat, a result that saw them bundled out of the tournament.Governor Dr. Ottichilo praises Queens after CAF Women’s Champions League debuthttps://t.co/5u42qC25l3 pic.twitter.com/XeZVKoetVO— Vihiga Queens FC (@Vihigaqueens) November 19, 2021 This was a shocker to fans and stakeholders and it came as a surprise for Queens players as well as they had anticipated a tough encounter against FAR Rabat who they went on to beat.”AS Far from Morocco was the team we knew would give us a headache but we were wrong. The one that actually gave us a run for our money was Rivers Angels. When they faced us, they played like they would never have to play again. They threw everything at us but we learn from our mistakes,” she stated.Despite exiting the competition at the initial stage, Wanyonyi says they picked lessons from the tournament that will come in handy in future assignments. She is also proud to have scored Queens’ first goal of the tournament in the win over FAR Rabat.”We won game 2, beating AS Far 2-0 and being our first time there, I’m sure our women’s teams will do well in future. I’m particularly proud that I scored the opening goal in that match and for that I am grateful. It’s good to be remembered for such things. Self-belief is key and giving it your all is also important. Football is both hard and easy. As Queens, we now know what it takes to be a champion- all the preps that need to be done. We tried our best nonetheless; playing at that level is not easy. You also have to believe in God,” she added. The scorer of Vihiga Queens’ first goal against FAR Rabat Violet Wanyonyi is from Kitale.Thanks. pic.twitter.com/AKacktvMUm— Ole Teya (@Kevin_teya) November 9, 2021 Wanyonyi and Queens now shift focus to reclaiming the league title that they lost to Thika Queens last season.
