Oboya Cup: Rongai whip Derby to storm to the semis

Rongai FC comfortably saw off Derby FC 2-0 in a Patrick Oboya Cup quarter final match staged at the Police Band Ground in South B on Sunday afternoon.The match that was initially set for Saturday was pushed to Sunday after the heavy downpour that was witnessed on Saturday rendering the pitch unplayableRongai FC, who have been dubbed tournament favorites, went ahead in the second minute through midfielder Glen Odhiambo who curled home a superb freekick from the edge of the area after a Derby defender had unnecessarily committed a foul in the danger zone. They nearly had a second moments later but Douglas Omwenga hit the side net from a promising position.Derby were struggling to settle in the game in the early stages as the visitors threatened to run riot with endless attacks. A quick start from keeper Ephantus Mungai set up Omwenga who lobbed over Onyango who was way off his line for his first of the game and Rongai’s second. Rongai took the comfortable advantage to the break.Omwenga should have scored his second of the match six minutes after the restart but he skied his effort from inside the penalty area. Eight minutes from time Moses Mwangi nearly got Rongai’s third but his shot after he had nutmegged the keeper was cleared off the line.Rongai preserved their advantage to sail to the semis where they will play the winner of the quarter final duel between S.U.SA and M.C.C. Home side MUFYA will face off with Team Ping in the first semifinal on Saturday 4th December from 3PM EAT.
