An Amos Asembeka first half strike is all Wazito needed to register their first league win of the season after downing Ulinzi Stars in an FKF Premier League match played on Saturday at the Utalii Grounds.Heading to the game, Wazito had never beaten Ulinzi in a league match. They were also winless this season. Ulinzi on the other hand had not lost any league match this season.”We played well today and I am happy that the players got a reward for the hard work that they have been doing for long. It is now a matter of building on this going forward,” Wazito coach Francis Kimanzi stated. His Ulinzi counterpart Stephen Ochola admitted that Wazito were superior in the first half. “Wazito had a very good first half I must admit. In the second half we made changes and tried to counter them but it wasn’t our day. So we go back to the drawing board and plan for our next games,” he said. The first opportunity of the match went Wazito’s way in the sixth minute when they won a freekick at the edge of the area, assistant captain Kevin Kimani stepped forward to take but his curled effort narrowly missed Ulinzi’s goal area. Next was Vincent Oburu who’s scorcher from inside the penalty area swerved off the target.Ulinzi’s first sniff of Wazito’s goal came in the quarter hour mark when Clinton Omondi tried his luck from range but he did not cause Bashir Ssekagya on Wazito goal any problems.Visibly in change of the proceedings in the opening half, Wazito continued to raid in search of the opening goal. Amos Asembeka missed an easy chance when he failed to connect to an Erickson Mulu cross from the left and two minutes later, the hosts were denied what looked like a clear spot kick when Asembeka was fouled in the area, the ref waved playoff much to the dismay of Wazito players and coaching staff. We eat teams because we are WAZITO#Wazito4life pic.twitter.com/WkQSUwLnLv— Wazito Football Club (@wazitofc) December 4, 2021 The hosts’ pressure finally yielded fruits in the 23rd minute when Asembeka, who had been at the center of everything curled home a beauty from inside the penalty area. Ten minutes later, Wazito had a chance to double their advantage only for Cliff Nyakeya’s volley to miss the target narrowly. Their dominant first half first half show saw them take a narrowly lead to the break.Having witnessed his side get outplayed in the first half, Ulinzi boss made two changes after the interval Daniel Waweru and Omar Boraafya were introduced for Ibrahim Shambi and Mark Bikokwa in a bid to stabilise the midfield.Unlike in the first half were there were a flury of chances in the opening minutes, the second half looked more cautious from both teams. The first opportunity went Ulinzi’s way in the 62nd minute when Biko Tindi rose high to head a Daniel Waweru cross but his connection was slightly off target. Next was Kevin Ouma whose header from another corner delivery went over. The Soldiers went all aerial balls, a strategy that saw them keep the Wazito backline on toes. At the other end the hosts looked dangerous particularly on the break. Ulinzi almost got the leveler in the 72nd minute but a Maurice Ojwang goal-line clearance saved Wazito, from the clearance Mulu was denied by James Saruni after a quick counter attack. Wazito captain Johnstone Omurwa’s superb block in the 80th minute denied Masita Masuta what looked like a clear goal.Bashir Ssekagya pulled a late save to secure the points for Wazito.Nzoia Sugar 0-1 Kakamega HomeboyzIn Bungoma, Homeboyz piled more misery on winless Nzoia Sugar at Sudi Stadium.
