Rongai United broke the hearts of onlooking South B residents as they defeated home favourites South B United Sports Academy (SUSA FC) 2-0 in the second semifinal of the Patrick Oboya Cup played at Police Band Grounds on Sunday evening. Before the encounter, both sides were looking to confirm their place alongside MUFYA FC who had already booked their place in the finale of the tournament sponsored by lead gaming firm Mozzart Bet. At the end of the day, it is Rongai who got the better of the fan backed side to sail through to the finals match.Oboya Cup: 10-man MUFYA book final ticket after edging Ping”It was a tough match today but I am glad we have made it to the final step. We started by saying that we will take it game by game and we have managed to make it to the last hurdle where the final now awaits,” Dan Ogero, the Rongai head coach said.In the match however, it is home side SUSA FC who made the brightest start in the game, the green jerseyed South B boys comfortably holding onto possession in the opening ten minutes. That impressive start however failed to materialize to anything meaningful as they lacked the creativity to cause any harm to the yellow stripped Rongai. In the 13th minute, favourites Rongai United showed them what clinicality means as Boniface Wambete capitalized on an unforced SUSA error to give his side the lead very much against the run of play. From a low cross threaded into the box from the right hand side, Protus Otieno fluffed his clearance that found Wambete unmarked on the edge of the box. Without hesitation, the midfielder took a single touch before unleashing his fierce shot that was aided into the back of the net via a slight deflection from the scrambling defense. His efforts in vain as Munabi wheeled in celebration with his mates.Stunned with the developments, SUSA threw bodies foward as they searched for a goal in an attempt to placate their disgruntled fans. However, all their attempts on goal were met by a sturdy Mungai Euphuntus who looked assured in between the Rongai goalposts. On the stroke of half time, Michael Gabriel almost pulled one back for them with their closest chance of the opening half. His fierce shot from the edge of the box missing the goal by a whisker as it drifted just wide after having the beating of the goalkeeper. Having survived from that momentary lapse, Rongai held on to take their two goal advantage into the break.Upon second half’s resumption, SUSA came out guns blazing in their obvious chase to try and pull back a goal qs quick as possible. But just like the first half, their finishing in the final third was wanting as they failed to threaten with any meaningful attempt. That would be the story of the second half as Rongai resolutely held for the victory.Following the win, Rongai will now battle for the cup and cash prizes against MUFYA FC in the final set for next Sunday December 12.
