New Manchester United coach Ralf Rangnick has overseen his second match in charge of the team, a 1-1 home draw with the Swiss team with the curious name of Young Boys. Although the match was insignificant in terms of qualification, it was a good chance for United’s fringe players and young guns to prove themselves at Old Trafford.Rangnick made all 11 changes to the team that beat Crystal Palace at the weekend and thus presented a few chances for players to impress him. Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were first-team regulars under Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer, but last night their starts were seen as a surprise. It’s funny how football works sometimes. Two more #MUAcademy players make their senior bows ✊🔴Congratulations, Charlie and Zidane 👏#MUFC | #UCL pic.twitter.com/zXL8KdjxrI— Manchester United (@ManUtd) December 8, 2021 In goal, Dean Henderson played well in place of David De Gea but it was a late substitute in goal that gave fans a lot of joy. Tom Heaton spent his Academy days with the Reds before leaving the club in 2010, going on to become a Premier League goalkeeper for both Burnley and Aston Villa. But this year he returned to United as a 35-year-old to add some depth to the club’s goalkeeping options. He used to play in friendlies in his first spell with the club, but it was a special moment when he came off the bench to make his competitive debut for the club, some 19 years since joining the youth ranks as a kid. Serbian veteran Nemanja Matic was given the captain’s armband on the night and asked to play in the centre of defence. Juan Mata started only his second match of the season alongside Donny van de Beek, the man who remains a mystery since his hyped arrival from Ajax last year.Thursday, 23.00: (2.00) West Ham (3.60) Dinamo Zagreb (4.00)The Red Devils took the lead with a magnificent acrobatic volley by Mason Greenwood from Shaw’s cross. The young attacker made a case to Rangnick of including him more often. One of the boys who didn’t impress was Amad Diallo. The Ivorian winger was signed for a lot of money a year ago, but injury setbacks and limited playtime utterly stalled his progress. It’s safe to say that he didn’t impress in the Young Boys dead-rubber. Either Rangnick builds his confidence or Amad goes out on a loan to get some playing time. At this point in his career – he really needs to be playing more.Jesse Lingard had a quiet game as he failed to provide an attacking spark. He spent the latter half of last season on loan at West Ham and impressed there. Perhaps he should do something similar again in January.Manchester United’s forward Shola Shoretire going into the pitch to play the prestigious Champions League game against Swiss Young Boys. He is 17 years old!. I mean only 17. pic.twitter.com/v8CO7cyV8N— Sun Min Kimes (@sunminkimes) December 8, 2021 Academy defender Teden Mengi replaced Shaw after an hour of play and impressed with his performance. He provided a notable sliding block that kept his team level and denied Young Boys the unlikely win that they so desired. Shola Shoretire got just over 20 minutes but found it hard to influence a game United had struggled in during the second half and there were only brief cameos for Charlie Savage and Zidane Iqbal, although this was a moment neither will forget, making their debuts for the club in a Champions League game at Old Trafford in front of 75,000 people. You cannot deny that there is a lot of talent within Manchester United’s ranks – both young and not-so-young. Now is the time for Ralf Rangnick to prove his exquisite coaching reputation and get Red Devils back on winning ways.UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUEGroup stage – matchday 6TuesdayRB Leipzig – Manchester City 2-1 (1-0)/Szoboszlai 24, Silva 71 – Mahrez 76/PSG – Club Brugge 4-1 (3-0)/Mbappe 2,7, Messi 38, 76 – Rits 68/Real Madrid – Inter 2-0 (1-0)/Kroos 17, Asensio 79/Shakhtar – Sheriff Tiraspol 1-0 (1-0)/Fernando 42 – Nikolov 90+2/Milan – Liverpool 1-2 (1-1)/Tomori 29 – Salah 36, Origi 55/Porto – Atl.Madrid 1-3 (0-0)/Oliveira 90+6 – Griezmann 56, Correa 90, De Paul 90+2/Dortmund – Besiktas 5-0 (2-0)/Malen 29, Reus 45, 53, Haaland 68, 81/Ajax – Sporting 4-2 (2-1)/Haller 8, Antony 42, Neres 58, Berghuis 62 – Santos 22, Tabata 78/WednesdayZenit – Chelsea 3-3 (2-1)/Claudinho 38, Azmoun 41, Ozdoev 90+4 – Werner 2, 85, Lukaku 62/Juventus – Malmo 1-0 (1-0)/Kean 18/Atalanta – Villareal postponedBayern – Barcelona 3-0 (2-0)/Muller 34, Sane 43/, Musiala 62Manchester United – Young Boys 1-1 (1-1)/Greenwood 9 – Rieder 42/Benfica – Dynamo Kyiv 2-0 (2-0)/Yaremchuk 16, Gilberto 22/Wolfsburg – LOSC Lille 1-3 (0-1)/Steffen 89 – Yilmaz 11, David 72, Gomes 78/Salzburg – Sevilla 1-0 (0-0)/Okafor 50/
